
The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has ordered its standby force to restore constitutional order in NIger Republic.
The President of ECOWAS, Omar Touray made the declaration while reading the resolution of ECOWAS on the Niger coup at the ECOWAS Second Extraordinary meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
It also called on the African Union, AU, partner countries, and institutions to support the resolution taken by the sub-regional body.
ECOWAS said all efforts made to dialogue with Niger Republic military junta have been defiantly rejected by coup leaders as they condemn the continuous detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.
For his part, President Bola Tinubu as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State of the subregional bloc expressed his commitment to the people of Niger while hoping that with the collective efforts of the West African leaders that a peaceful resolution can be reached to restore peace and democratic stability in the country.
ECOWAS also called on the African Union, all partner countries, and institutions including the United Nations to endorse all the decisions taken by the authority on the situation in Niger in its effort to ensure a quick restoration of constitutional order, in conformity with its normative instruments.
