In a sneaky Twitter announcement Thursday afternoon (Aug. 10), MTV announced that Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the 2017 Video Music Awards.
For Lamar, he leads the star-studded pack with eight nominations, most notably for artist of the year and video of the year for his ground-shaking single “Humble.” This will be the second time Lamar will grace the stage at the VMAs, with his first coming in 2013 when he performed his Robin Thicke feature “Give It 2 U” alongside Thicke, Miley Cyrus and 2 Chainz.
This year has been a monstrous one for the Compton MC thus far. First, he delivered his newly crowned opus DAMN. to his rabid fan-base in April. Then, he swept through the country with a monsoon of strong performances from his DAMN. tour. And just this week, Lamar earned himself the cover spot on Rolling Stone.
During his in-depth RS interview, Lamar spoke on his insatiable appetite for success. “My biggest vice is being addicted to the chase of what I’m doing. It turns into a vice when I shut off people that actually care for me, because I’m so indulged spreading this word. Being on that stage, knowing that you’re changing people’s lives, that’s a high.”
In addition to Lamar, Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes, Fifth Harmony, Lorde will grace the stage as well on Aug. 27. The show will be hosted by Katy Perry.
